The AFRICOBRA evolved from the Coalition of Black Revolutionary Artists (COBRA) that was established in Chicago, Illinois in 1968. Members of the COBRA met on a regular basis to discuss the development and ideology of a true black aesthetic that would promote a strong sense of pride among African Americans. The COBRA philosophy of art involved the use of open color, free symmetry, positive images, and expressive awesomeness.
