| Abstract (English): |
The recently discovered painting Death of St. Ursula by Ivan Grohar was commissioned on occasion of the renewal of the Confraternity of St. Ursula for a Happy Death at St. James church in Ljubljana. As the model the painter used an older painting by Valentin Metzinger in the confraternity's altar of the Ursuline church in Ljubljana. We have been aware so far of a painting with the central segment of the same composition, and the sketch for the altar painting that has recently surfaced in the pilgrimage church of St. Ana at Tunjice. The receipt of payment for two paintings dated February 25, 1901, and signed by Grohar refers to both altar paintings, since the sketch after the execution of the commission becomes redundant. Grohar might have donated it to the chaplain Pečjak, who is registered as its owner in 1927. The commission of The Death of St. Ursula altar-piece was probably given by the confraternity itself to Grohar as the member of St. James parish and emerging artist praised at the time for the paintings for the Brezje pilgrimage church in Upper Carniola. Novo odkrita slika Smrtsv. Uršule je nastala ob obno-vi bratovščine sv. Uršule za srečno smrt po predlogi Valentina Metzingerja in sicer oltarne bratovščinske slike pri uršulinkah v Ljubljani. Doslej smo poznali samo detajl iste Groharjeve kompozicije na menzi oltarja sv. Ane pri Sv. Jakobu, osnutek pa se je znašel v romarski cerkvi sv. Ane na Tunjicah. Potrdilo o pre-jemu plačila za dve sliki z dne 25. februarja 1901 se nanaša na obe sliki za oltar, medtem ko je osnutek po izročenem naročilu brez prave vrednosti. Grohar ga je verjetno poklonil kaplanu Pečjaku, ki je v katalogu leta 1927 zaveden kot lastnik. Sliko je verjetno naročila bratovščina pri sofaranu, ki je prav tedaj zaslovel kot dober cerkveni slikar z dvema slikama za romarsko cerkev Marije Pomagaj na Brezjah. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
