الوصف: This paper is about a case study that investigated syntactic and semantic features of modals that express notions like deontic possibility (i.e. permission) and deontic necessity (i.e. obligation) in the Croatian text by comparing their uses with those in the English text and by analyzing their occurrence and meanings in order to discover similarities and differences in translation, and investigate if a shift in modality occurred in translation. The results of the study confirm that the translation equivalent of the modal verb expressing deontic possibility, Croatian modal verb moći, is may in English. In translation, the areas of deontic necessity, Croatian modals valjati, morati, trebati and modal lexeme biti dužan, demonstrate the most divergent range of modal verbs in English, that is must, shall, to be + past participle and should. The occurrence, nature, specific properties and the use of the Croatian modals valjati and trebati as well as the captured shift in modality in translation are also discussed.
