الوصف: Item does not contain fulltext Two lexical decision experiments investigated whether words are activated by preceding input differing only in a vowel or consonant. One experiment was cross-modal (auditory-visual) and in English, the other auditory-auditory and in Dutch. Significant facilitation was observed in the latter experiment ("lepel" was recognised more rapidly when immediately preceded by "lemel" or "lopel"; "kaper" was recognised more rapidly when immediately preceded by "kamer" or "koper"). We conclude that stored lexical representations can be activated by minimally mismatching input, and that (in this task) vowel and consonant mismatches produce equivalent effects. The activation is however short-lived, disappearing after even one intervening word; moreover, it is specific to spoken word forms and cannot transfer to responses to visual input.
