الوصف: For the treatment of several tumour types, calculated proton dose distributions predict an improvement in tumour response compared to conformal photon and electron radiotherapy. The dose can be delivered with much higher precision due to the limited proton range and the sharp distal fall-offs. For tumour treatment and dosimetric purposes, it is necessary to know exactly the proton range for a given energy in tissue or an equivalent medium such as water or acrylic. Different calculation codes, mainly based on the Bethe-Bloch formula which determines the energy loss due to Coulomb scattering, are currently used in proton dosimetry. They differ in the treatment of the nuclear collisions that also occur and in the simulated detector sizes. Sometimes, inelastic scattering is completely neglected or underestimated. Calculated dose distributions are presented for proton beams in water with a kinetic energy of around 175 MeV. Two Monte Carlo codes, PTRAN and HETC, are compared with recent experimental data from COSY, Julich, and the discrepancies that occur are shown.
