It has been shown that polyvinyl alcohol — ferric chloride support can act as a catalyst — oxidant for chemical polymerization of pyrrole on its surface. The laminate so formed is highly conducting (15 S/cm) and exhibits good mechanical properties. Mossbauer and EPR studies are consistent with the proposal of oxidative polymerization which involves the insertion of Cl − as the ionic species neutralizing the polycarbonium cation.
