الوصف: Phonological problems have proved to be good predictors of reading difficulties (Bryant, Bradley, MacLean, & Crossland, 1989; Lundberg, Olofsson, & Wall, 1980), and training in phonological awareness appears to have a positive impact on early reading development (Ball & Blachman, 1991; Lundberg, Frost, & Petersen, 1988). Therefore, some have argued in favour of a causal link between phonological problems and reading difficulties (e.g., Hoien & Lundberg, 1991). However, the hypothesis that reading difficulties are narrowly localized in a specific phonological dysfunction is challenged by the verbal deficit hypothesis most explicitly expressed by Vellutino (1979) who related reading difficulty to broader cognitive linguistic dysfunctions.
