الوصف: Promotion decisions within the prison system are an important, but seldom studied component of the rehabilitation process. This investigation assessed the extent that commonly used background (early arrest, prior violent crimes, number of previous arrests, institutional misconduct) and psychometric (IQ tests, Schizophrenia and Psychopathic Deviate scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) variables influenced promotion recommendations. The data were the records of 509 inmates convicted of assaultive crimes, considered for promotion to a minimum security setting. Discriminant analysis revealed that Psychopathic Deviate scores had the greatest impact on promotion decisions. All variables, except IQ, made statistically significant contributions to the predictions of promotion decisions. Overall, the resulting equation successfully classified 75 percent of the promotion recommendations.
