1,3-Di-alkyl-2-(arylazo)imidazolium iodide ( RaaiR 2 ′ + I - ) has been used to prepare iodocuprate(I) and iodoargentate(I) complexes. The structural confirmation has been carried out by single crystal X-ray diffraction study in representative cases. Iodo bridged anion, [Cu2(μ-I)2I2]2−, serves as charge support to dialkylazoimidazolium ion ( RaaiR 2 ′ + ). Silver(I) compound is a trimeric iodo-bridged [Ag3I5]2− that forms 1D chain while imidazolium ion, RaaiR 2 ′ + , is penetrating into the network. Electrostatic interaction between organic cation and inorganic anion and supramolecular interactions viz. hydrogen bonding, D–H–π, π–π interactions contribute to the crystal packing.
