This paper presents the cumulative findings from an over three year investigation and collaboration journey by the Enterprise Architecture University Alliance. It is inclusive of the field-based view of the Business Forum of The Open Group regarding the Business Architecture profession. It contends there is a need for a new role, the Business Architect. Further that this role resolves many issues associated with business/IT alignment and transformation issues. This new role differentiates itself from other architecture and business roles. Finally, it contends that certification is justified by the need to identify qualified practitioners for this role. This paper is the result of a working group of The Open Group but does not necessarily represent the view of all its members.
