الوصف: Although low body-weight and weight loss have been documented in institutionalized patients with senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SDAT), there is a paucity of information on the nutrition of SDAT patients living in the community. Dietary, haematological, biochemical and immunological indices of nutrition were similar in nine patients with mild to moderate SDAT living in their own homes and in nine elderly controls. However, the SDAT patients were noted to have lower body weight, triceps skinfold thickness, body-mass index and mid-arm muscle circumference. These findings suggest that low body-weight is a feature of early SDAT. Further study is needed to determine whether low body-weight is associated with the aetiology of the disease, or whether it is a result of the disease process.
