One of the striking features of modern tourism has been the spectacular growth in tourism traffic to the Mediterranean coastlines (Beckett, 1997). For many small states, particularly island economies with favorable natural resources, tourism was regarded as an easy low cost/high profit option offering limitless scope for economic and social improvement (OECD, 1996).
