This essay explores how the formal and rhetorical device of metafiction is linked to the topical-thematic concern of deep-sea biology in four twentieth-century novels. In so doing, it highlights ways in which science and literature function dialogically to expand human perspectives beyond received ideas and cognitive scripts. Comparative literature and science, together, thus emerge as an ethical and political form of writing and reading.
