Patients who are affected by isolated Crohn’s disease of the rectum or rectosigmoid region and do not respond well to medical therapy including biologic agents or immunosuppressants may require surgical intervention. Nonetheless, there have been few reports about the surgical treatment for isolated proctitis/proctosigmoiditis likely because Crohn’s disease (CD) confined to the rectum or the rectosigmoid colon is a relatively uncommon clinical entity. Likewise, patients with Crohn’s disease of the rectum usually have complex anorectal fistulas and therefore, proctitis without perianal involvement is rare.
