الوصف: Optical hydrogen detection with periodic sub-wavelength palladium arrays was recently proposed by our group. This optical detection scheme uses changes in the main transmittance peak of hole arrays to detect hydrogen concentration near the lower explosion limit in air. Square lattices of square holes show attenuation in the peak transmittance upon exposure to hydrogen. Square lattices of rectangular holes exhibit shift toward longer wavelengths of the transmittance peak upon exposure to hydrogen. In this report, the effects of hydrogen exposure on rectangular lattices of square holes are investigated. A square lattice sample and a rectangular lattice sample were fabricated and their transmittance spectra recorded under different hydrogen concentrations. The fabricated rectangular lattice is found more sensitive to hydrogen than the square lattice in terms of transmittance attenuation and peak shift. Further optimization of the parameters of the rectangular-lattice should lead to improved sensing characteristics of the palladium hole arrays.
