This chapter summarizes benefits of Guided Cognition design and identifies applications of Guided Cognition design. A major benefit is that Guided Cognition homework facilitates learning for students of various abilities. Results from several of our experiments are assembled in a table that clearly shows two things. One is that students of low, average, and advanced ability can all benefit from questions that have been enriched by having cognitive events embedded into them. A second and very important observation is that the students who have Guided Cognition-designed homework questions perform nearly as well, or as well, as students who are at a higher ability level but who have had Traditional homework questions. In other words, Guided Cognition homework provides enough of a performance boost so that average-ability students' quiz performance can look similar to that of advanced-ability students who have completed Traditional homework, and so that lower-ability students' quiz performance can look similar to that of average-ability students who have completed Traditional homework. In this chapter, we discuss the generality of Guided Cognition design, and we also list implications for instructional design.
