الوصف: The chemical leaching of Ra and Th from U mine tailings (Beaverlodge, Canada) has been studied as part of an investigation into the chemical and mineralogical location of these radionuclides in the tailings particles. The leaching reaction is found to be first order in each of several cations, while B a+ shows an apparent surface saturation. This is consistent with the occurrence of a+ surface exchange reaction whose half time appears to be about 7 min. Leaching continues as a+ process following a+ parabolic rate law, as though by diffusion control. A mathematical model is described which combines these two processes and reasonably well accounts for the experimental data.
