الوصف: Extensive source material survives for Ludwig van Beethoven's studies in composition with Joseph Haydn, Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, and Antonio Salieri. Even though these sources were published immediately following his death, Gustav Nottebohm's 1873 edition was the first rigorous study to adhere to standards of philological accuracy and contextual integrity. Nevertheless, Nottebohm avoided addressing particular problems and offered judgmental observations in which he relentlessly emphasized the teachers’ supposed weaknesses and shortcomings. A reassessment of Beethoven's experience as a student and other issues in his biography—using methods of source verification and consulting all of the known sources for the first time—challenges the commonplace notion of Beethoven as a rebel against tradition.
