الوصف: A detailed study of suspended matter and metal fluxes in a large marginal sea has enabled us to assess the impact of nearshore precipitation of the dissolved and particulate constituents of river discharge upon the oceanic residence times of seven trace metals. A distinct improvement in the agreement between stream flow and sedimentation rate estimates of residence time has been achieved and we conclude that most previous determinations, particularly in the cases of Fe and Mn, have been overestimated. Our calculations yield oceanic residence times of Fe which are compatible with direct measurements of the settling rate of Fe in the deep ocean.
