Individual differences in developmental trajectories of affect-biased attention and relations with caregiver anxiety symptoms, infant temperamental negative affect and social behavior with peers
We examined individual differences in infant affect-biased attention trajectories and relations with caregiver anxiety symptoms, temperamental negative affect and social behavior. Infants (N = 278, 53% White, 49% assigned male at birth) recruited in Central Pennsylvania and Northern New Jersey provided eye-tracking data at 4-, 8-, 12-, 18- and 24-months and participated in a peer social dyad. Caregivers reported anxiety symptoms and temperamental negative affect. Using group-based trajectory modeling, we found that individual differences in affect-biased attention trajectories related to caregiver anxiety symptoms, but not to social dyad fearful behaviors. Higher temperamental negative affect related to fearful behaviors, particularly as the social dyad continued. Our results provide evidence for individual differences in affect-biased attention development and relations with anxiety risk.
