This chapter presents an interesting introductory overview of the world of ceramic materials. After a premise relating to multifunctional materials and their characteristics, the theme of traditional ceramic materials is considered, starting from historical information and arriving at the current definition relating to them. The advanced ceramic materials are then considered, with the relative constitutive characteristics and focusing on their current and possible future uses. A paragraph on the properties of ceramic materials and their current uses in every field of interest follows. Then the ceramic foams and their characteristics are considered. Attention is placed on applications of these materials in green building and the environment, alsoconsidering the possible risks to human health, in relation to the involvednanotechnological aspects. The lines of research related to these materials are examined and the conclusions close the chapter. A rich and updated bibliography follows, also relating to the mathematical modeling inherent this sector. |
