| الوصف: | Impaired respiration and dyspnoea are commonly reported in pet rabbits, usually in association with their relatively-prevalent respiratory infections. However, other causes of dyspnoea, such as non-infectious intra-thoracic pathologies, should also be considered. Thoracic effusions are most often described in rabbits having either cardiac dysfunction or thoracic neoplasia. This case report discusses an idiopathic chylothorax in a pet Lionhead rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) presented for severe dyspnoea. Thoracic radiography and ultrasonography showed pleural effusion. Ultrasound-guided aspiration of the thoracic effusion removed a large volume of fluid with a pinkish-white cloudy appearance. Cytological examination of the fluid confirmed a diagnosis of chylothorax. The rabbit died shortly thereafter and the gross necropsy did not show any obvious pathologies. In this report, we discuss the clinical approach to dyspnoea caused by non-infectious conditions in pet rabbits, and advise veterinary surgeons to keep these on their differential list when presented with rabbits showing similar clinical signs. |
