الوصف: In this study, Acanthogyrus (Acanthosentis) persicus n. sp. is described from Periophthalmus waltoni Koumans, 1941 in Qeshm Island, Iran. P. waltoni is a species of oxudercine gobies, with a wide range of habitats including mangrove forests and tidal mudflats of the Persian Gulf. It is known as a biological indicator to monitor evolutionary processes. A. (A.) persicus n. sp. is recognized by having a small trunk entirely covered with spines and a unique proboscis armature. Large hooks of the anterior circle are widely separated from very small hooks of the middle and posterior circles. Comparison of the length ratio of anterior hook/middle and posterior hooks among different Acanthosentis species showed a value of approximately four only for our new species and Acanthogyrus (Acanthosentis) barmeshoori, though the new species is distinguished from A. (A.) barmeshoori by the absence of a para-receptacle structure and the presence of spines covering the entire trunk. In addition, A. (A.) persicus bears lateral hooks in the anterior circle that are smaller than other hooks in the same circle, displaced posteriorly. The prevalence rate of acanthocephalan infection of P. waltoni was 5%. This study is the first report of Acanthosentis infection of P. waltoni in Iran. Further studies are required to evaluate the acanthocephalan fauna of other mudskippers such as Boleophthalmus and Scartelaos.
