The article focuses on the use of bi-directional chargers with high power density in smart grids. Furthermore, a selected atypical topology of bidirectional charger is described. This topology allows single-stage power transmission, which reduces switching losses and circuit complexity. The high power density determines the chargers to be used in electric vehicles, becoming important parts of smart grids. The assumed characteristics of the developed charger were practically tested on a functional prototype in two operation modes, i.e. charge and discharge modes.
