SUMMARY Using several specific genetic diseases as examples, this article has illustrated basic genetic principles that can be applied to many clinical situations. Practicing obstetricians must be aware that advances are being made daily in the care of patients with inherited disorders and in prenatal diagnosis. A fundamental understanding of human genetics is essential in order to offer optimal care for patients during their reproductive years.
