This species is brown to grayish brown, colored lighter ventrally; is semiarboreal with a long, nonprehensile tail; and is 1 of 5 species in the genus Bassaricyon. It occurs in Central America from Nicaragua through Panama, and in South America has been documented in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.
