| الوصف: | Sakpata, divinité d’origine yoruba, est connu, partout où il a été implanté (dans les pays du Golfe du Bénin mais aussi dans les Amériques noires) comme dieu de la variole et plus largement des maladies éruptives et/ou contagieuses, mais au Bénin et au Togo s’est développée une tradition qui en fait également le vodun (divinité) de la Terre. Cet article revient sur cette problématique et retrace l’origine de cette assertion dans la littérature anthropologique. A partir d’enquêtes menées à Savalou (Moyen Bénin) et d’une littérature de portée plus générale, l’auteur conteste la thèse qui ferait de Sakpata un dieu de la fertilité et met en évidence la nature complexe du rapport de cette divinité à la terre. Sakpata, a deity from the Yoruba region, is known everywhere it became established (in the countries of the Benin Gulf but also in the black Americas) as the god of smallpox and more widely as the god of eruptive and contagious diseases ; but in Benin and Togo, a tradition developed making it also the earth god. This paper goes back to revisits this issue and traces the origin of this assertion in anthropological literature. Taking as her starting point investigations conducted in Savalu (Middle Benin) and arguing from more general literature, the author disputes the thesis which makes Sakpata a god of fertility, and she throws light on the complex nature of the connection between this god and the earth. |
