| الوصف: | Miembro de la comisión boliviana de límites con la Argentina en 1902-1904, el ingeniero francés Jean-Baptiste Vaudry sacó un centenar de fotografías de las poblaciones criollas e indígenas que visitó. Se presenta aquí esta colección fotográfica así como notas inéditas del autor sobre los indígenas de la región. Aunque influenciada en parte por las representaciones imperantes entre los criollos de la “frontera chaqueña”, la imagen que sus fotografías y textos arrojan del Chaco boliviano también se desmarca de ellas y nos ofrece, en definitiva, un retrato abigarrado probablemente mucho más cercano a la realidad que el de otros viajeros de su tiempo. A member of the Bolivian-Argentinian Boundary Commission in 1902-1904, the French engineer Jean-Baptiste Vaudry took a hundred photographs of the creole and indigenous villages he visited during his trip. This article presents both his photographic collection and his unpublished notes on the indigenous peoples of the region. Though certainly influenced by the prevailing representations of the “Chaco frontier” dwellers, this material paints a different image of the Bolivian Chaco and reveals quite a colorful scenario that was probably closer to reality than many other travelogues of its time. |
