White mistletoe (Viscum album L.) is a perennial, evergreen, shrubby, semi-parasitic plant that grows on various host trees. Since 1917, mistletoe preparations have been used in antitumor therapies and today are often used in complementary medicine in the treatment of tumors. The main cytotoxic components of mistletoe are lectins and viscotoxins. Mistletoe research has shown its numerous biological effects. In addition to anticancer, it also shows antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral and immunomodulatory activities. The aim of the study was to determine the antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity of white mistletoe extracts prepared by maceration of water-ethanol base, taking into account the following maceration parameters: mass concentration of plant material 20, 40 and 80 g Lˉ¹ and volume fraction of ethanol in water-ethanol bases 25, 40, 55 and 70 %. Since experiments to determine antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity in the laboratory have not been conducted due to a pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, this part of the paper provides an overview of the results published so far in the literature for the said experiments. |
