The museum of Casa Romei is a 15th century building belonged to Giovanni Romei, a wealthy and influential figure closely entwined with the Este Family in Ferrara. In 1977, two wooden panels, one of which painted on both sides, were re-discovered and restored. The panels which originally decorated one of the building’s room, address two main themes: the devotion to the liberal arts and the interest to geography. Since then, the painted panels have not been undergoing any further intervention. The poor state of conservation of the room in which the panels are placed, makes them not accessible to visitors. In 2019 the Museum of Casa Romei started an imminent conservation plan of the painted panels aimed to their treatment for future exhibitions. To this end, but also to ensure the long and lasting survive of the two panels for as long as possible, an extensive campaign of non-invasive and micro-destructive investigation has been done. The investigations had the purpose of study the artistic technique, analyse the pigments and evaluate the condition of the two panels distinguishing the restorations that took place in the 20th century from the originals. Finally, the information obtained from the investigations will provide the basis for planning the future conservation and restoration project of the painted panels.
