On admet, avec G. Dumézil, que les Romains ont historicisé les mythes indo-européens, selon un processus de démythisation. Ne pourrait-on inverser la perspective en faisant l’hypothèse d’une mythisation de l’histoire ? Non générale et systématique, mais du moins ponctuelle et liée à certains événements. Telle est la lecture que tente cette contribution, à partir de divers épisodes de l’oeuvre de Tite-Live mettant en scène Fabius Maximus (le Cunctator). Des événements de l’époque historique sont ainsi rapprochés de récits de l’époque mythique et légendaire qui apparaissent dès lors fonctionner comme des événements primordiaux et paradigmatiques ensuite réactualisés. Est notamment proposée une interprétation de la rivalité entre Fabius Maximus, dictateur, et Minucius Rufus, maître de la cavalerie, comme réactualisation du mythe de Romulus et Rémus : plusieurs caractéristiques communes fondamentales rapprochent les deux récits. Écrivain nostalgique du passé, Tite-Live apparaît, à travers cette lecture, comme l’historien antique peut-être le plus proche d’une pensée mythique. It is admitted, with G. Dumezil, that the Romans historicized the Indo-european myths, following a demythologizing process. Could we not reverse the perspective by putting forward the hypothesis of a mythologizing process of history ? Not a general and systematic hypothesis, but at least punctual and linked to certain events. Such is the reading attempted by this contribution, starting from various episodes in Livy’ s work staging Fabius Maximus (the Cunctator). Events of the historical period are accordingly connected with narratives of the mythical and legendary period which henceforward appear to be functioning as primordial and paradigmatic events later reactualized. An interpretation is notably advanced of the rivalry between Fabius Maximus, the dictator, and Minucius Rufus, the master of the cavalry, as a reactualisation of the myth of Romulus and Remus : several common fundamental characteristics bring the two narratives close together. A wistful writer of the past, Livy appears through this reading as the historian of Antiquity possibly closest to a mythical way of thinking. |
