Souvent considérée comme une période de faible intensité au niveau des actions politiques engagées, la IVe République est le théâtre d’une densification de l’activité sportive. L’objet de cette étude est de prendre la mesure de l’action des services de l’État dans le domaine du sport et de l’éducation physique. En s’attachant à déployer l’enseignement de l’éducation physique à travers tout le territoire, Gaston Roux tend à créer les conditions d’une diffusion culturelle de grande ampleur. Celle-ci est mise en évidence par le volontarisme qu’il développe à l’égard des sports, particulièrement par l’intermédiaire du sport scolaire et universitaire. Si ce projet s’applique à inscrire l’école dans une nouvelle dynamique, il prend tout son sens en visant d’autres catégories comme la jeunesse ouvrière ou les licenciés sportifs. L’intérêt porté à la réglementation de la pratique des activités sportives souligne également l’effort constant mené pour en faire une réalité plus largement partagée. L’étude des archives institutionnelles laisse ainsi apparaître que la IVe République correspond dans le domaine de l’éducation physique et des sports à une phase importante de structuration durant laquelle il s’agit d’initier une dynamique collective autour des pratiques sportives. The Fourth Republic often considered as a period of low intensity as far as political actions were concerned, was the scene, nevertheless, of an intensification of sporting activity. The object of this study is to assess the activities of the State services in the field of sport and physical education. In his attempt to promote the teaching of physical education throughout the country, Gaston Roux aimed to create the conditions for a widespread cultural initiative. This was noticeable in his proactive approach to sport and, particularly, to school and university sporting activities. This program sought to introduce a new dynamic in schools and fulfilled its role by targeting other categories of people such as the community of young workers or even sport-licence holders. The interest shown in the regulation of sporting activities also emphasised the constant efforts made to try and turn them into a more widely shared mainstream reality. The study of institutional records reveals that the Fourth Republic was a significant period in the structuring of physical education and sports and during which there was an attempt to initiate a collective dynamic around sporting activities.
