الوصف: During the erythrocyte (RBC) stage of P. falciparum infection variant surface antigens (VSAs) such as PfEMP1s and RIFINs expressed on RBCs are important for infection and evasion of host innate immune system. Here, Chew et al. use a NSG mouse model, which is deficient in B, T and NK cells but retains macrophages, to show that PfEMP1 surface expression is required for in vivo adaptation as well as in vitro evasion of macrophage phagocytosis.
