See "Avant-propos" (pages 3-14), which has the form of a facetious dialogue between the author and the purported publisher, mocking the vogue for novels translated from the English. "Par Crébillon d'après la permission tacite (BnF, ms. fr. 21993, n° 1486)"--BnF. Formerly generally attributed to François Barbé-Marbois; see Barbier, A.A. Ouvrages anonymes, II, column 596: "Guliane, conte physique et moral, traduit de l'anglois, et enrichi de notes (par le comte Fr. Barbé de Marbois). London et Paris, Hardy, 1769" (the date 1769 is presumably an error for 1770, as no other edition under this title is known). The "A Londres : Chez Jean Nourse" publisher information is false. "Publié à Paris par Siméon-Prosper Hardy, d'après la permission tacite"--BnF. A later edition, published under title "Nadir-Kan et Gulianne : conte persan, pour servir de supplément aux Mille et une nuits," with imprint "A Londres, et se trouve a Paris, Chez J.F. Bastien, libraire ... 1772," is apparently a reissue of the sheets of this edition with a new title page.
