وصف مادي: 1 statue of 2 figurines : board, wire, textile, fibers ; 16 cm tall mounted on board 4 x 12 cm
مستخلص: This is a statuette of two figurines (6 inches tall mounted on board 1.5 x 4.5 inches) one a man playing a panpipe, the other a woman wearing an aguayo, a utility shoulder cloth, holding a drop spindle to weave. They likely represent Quechua people. Quechua is the collective term for several ethnic groups of the central Andes of South America, including Bolivia. In the 16th century, the Spanish prohibited the Quechua from wearing native Inca tunics and wrap-around dresses. The peoples then adopted the clothing still in use today. Women wear skirts and blouses with colorful woven shawls around their shoulders, as seen in the figurine of the woman in this statue wearing a aguayo of colorful stripes with symbols. Quechua Women often use a rectangular piece of cloths, to carry children and take products to the market. Quechua girls learn to spin and weave at a young age. While tending flocks or caring for children, women can be seen spinning thread using a drop spindle. Men wear trousers, shirts and woven ponchos. Nearly every Quechua man and boy has a poncho, generally red in color and decorated with intricate patterns distinct to his district. These ponchos are worn on festivals, village meetings, weddings and other special occasions. Sandals are the preferred footwear for everyone. The figurines are wearing Catacaos shawl straw hats; named for the city in northern Peru and make of shawl straw, from the palm of the jipijapa palm.
