| مستخلص: | Log cabin with side chimney sits atop a hill. It is surrounded by massive hillside erosion. Drought continued to be a problem in the South throughout the 1930s. There were four major droughts during the 1930s: 1930-1931, 1934, 1936, and 1939-1940. Farmers in the Great Plains were hit the hardest, and 21 percent of them received federal emergency relief in 1937. Farmers had overproduced crops to the detriment of the soil (and prices), and erosion affected farmers' production ability. Consequently, many farms were foreclosed on during the Great Depression. The FDR administration first attempted to alleviate farm troubles through the Agricultural Adjustment Act, but the Supreme Court nixed it. Congress replaced it with farm-lending programs and instruction in soil conservation methods. The Resettlement Administration, later renamed the Farm Security Administration, aimed to improve farming and forestry practices to prevent flooding, erosion, and the dust storms typical of the Dust Bowl. |
