4. (EN) A Syrian-Lebanese-Spanish team has been carrying out an archaeological research project in the area west of the city of Homs, in the Arabic Republic of Syria, since 2004 (Haïdar- Boustani et al., 2005, 2007, 2008 y 2009; Ibáñez et al., 2008a y b). The institutions involved are the Institución Milà i Fontanals (Departamento de Arqueología y Antropología) belonging to the CSIC (Higher Council for Scientific Research), and Instituto Internacional de Investigaciones Prehistóricas de Cantabria, at the Universidad de Cantabria, from Spain; the Université Saint Joseph of Beirut (USJ), from Lebanon, and the Syrian Direction Générale des Antiquités et des Musées (DGAM). The project is supervised by Juan José Ibáñez (CSIC), Maya Haïdar-Boustani (USJ) and Michel Al- Maqdissi (DGAM). The area of study lies between the city of Homs in the east, the Krak des Chevaliers in the west, the Lebanese border in the south and the city of Shin in the north. This gives a surface area of 560 square kilometres. The project’s objectives are to: 1. Document the archaeological heritage in the region, applying new methodologies to archaeological surveying. 2. Collaborate in the protection of the archaeological heritage and in the training of Syrian archaeologists. 3. Study the origin of the Neolithic in the region. 4. Determine the first trade routes in the Bronze Age. 5. Document the numerous Bronze Age megalithic necropolises in the area. 6. Reconstruct the evolution of the palaeoclimate in the area since the Holocene. The area was surveyed archaeologically between 2004 and 2007. Based on the cited objectives, in 2008, our fieldwork focused on (Fig 1): 1. The geophysical survey, using electrical tomography, of the archaeological sites at Jeftelik (Natufian), Tell al Marj(Pottery Neolithic and Roman) and Tell Ezou (Chalcolithicand Bronze Age). This work was supervised by M. Himi. 2. Test excavations at Jeftelik, Tell al Marj and Tell Ezou. 3. The on-going documentation of the megalithic nec |
