مستخلص: Mining revenues rose significantly in 2010 compared with 2009, with the non-metals sector showing the largest increase of 44.1% followed by 33.9% for the metals sector and 25.7% for coal. A map is presented showing the provinces with the most important mining areas and the main mineral resources being exploited. Coal reserves are estimated to be 8.7 billion t of which 6.6 billion t are mineable. Current output is just under 70 000 000 tpa. There were 22 operating coal mines in 2009, mostly located in western Canada. Iron ore output was 35 000 000 t in 2010, with most mining operations located in the Labrador Belt. In general the iron content of the ores is relatively low at 30-45%. Project developments include LabMag, KeMag, Mary River and the James deposit. Output at the Mount Wright mine is expected to increase to 24 000 000 tpa by 2014. Cu, Ni and Zn are the most important base metals being mined, but significant quantities of U, Al, Pb, Co, Mo, Nb and Pt group metals are also produced. Au production was 97.1 t, putting the country ninth in terms of world production, and one of the largest new projects is the Meliadine prospect in the permafrost region close to the west coast of Hudson Bay in Nunavut. Other Au projects include Lamaque in Val d’Or, Quebec, the Galore Creek Cu-Au project and the New Afton project. There is increasing investment by Chinese companies in the mining industry.
