مستخلص: One of the main aims during expansion at the Carol Lake project, Newfoundland, was the reduction of the amount of oversize material being produced, along with optimisation of its downstream processing. A key approach was the introduction of a thicker emulsion into the blastholes to give more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduce the infiltration of the emulsion into the cracks in the rock mass. Blast results showed reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muck piles. There was also a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge. Shovel-based camera technology was used at the digging face to determine the effectiveness of oversize reduction: a digital vision system (DVS) captured images which were stamped with GPS locations. The digital images were then analysed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as a key performance indicator (KPI). These confirmed that the amount of oversize generated had been reduced by a factor of 50%.
