The first paper places gold metallurgy into perspective by discussing the historic evolution of gold metallurgy and the technologies and challenges facing metallurgists today. This theme is continued into the first technical session where the problems with obtaining meaningful measurements in gold processing are investigated from sampling through to desorption from carbon. In the following sessions, existing plant practices are extensively reviewed: new research, development and engineering techniques are discussed; emerging processes which will be important in the future are revealed; and finally, some environmental control aspects of gold processing are considered. 35 papers are included in this volume.
