| مستخلص: | After France’s defeat in 1871, a shockwave swept over Europe. Officer societies all over the continent began to discuss how to wage war in this new industrial era. In this context, and through a number of analytical tools, this thesis seeks to explore how the members of the Krigsvidenskabelige Selskab (Society of War Science) adapted to the accelerating changing conditions of waging war in the industrial age, with a special focus on how the Fortifications of Copenhagen figured into this. The members of the Society concluded that due to the country’s precarious geopolitical situation, lack of resources and the analysis that the tactical defense was superior to the offense, Denmark had to build a defensive doctrine around a fortified Copenhagen. This change in doctrine also provided a change in the officer’s role. He was no longer the “great captain” that led his men to victory by example, but a technocrat who coordinated fires. For the officers of the Society, the Fortifications of Copenhagen would provide a window into the new rapidly changing and complex of era of warfare. In articles great plans on what tactics and technologies should be used in future wars were drafted, that incorporated the newest technological advances into spectacular defensive systems reminiscent of the trench networks of World War 1. The members the Society as a whole, seem to have viewed their epoque as one exemplified by constant change and a growing complexity and thus tried to adapt as best as they could. The members of the Society also had to adapt to the new role of professional officer. This thesis concludes that the officers did indeed see themselves as a separate professional entity, but when politicians tried to encroach on questions the officers deemed to be of importance to national defense, they saw this as an attack on their professional competence as they, not the politicians, knew what was best for the nation on these matters.
