مستخلص:	Considering that Brazilian researches on translation and interpreting from/into/between sign languages can be combined into what is known as Sign Language Translation and Interpreting Studies (SLTIS), we carry out a reflection on the emergence of this new academic field and its direct connection to Translation Studies (TS) and Interpreting Studies (IS). Hence, we shall present the interdependence and fundamental distinction between TS and IS, search for references in the interpreting and translation of sign languages in major TS and IS writings, and reflect on the SLTIS in Brazil. This reflection is based on sign language translation and interpreting research carried out in graduate school and on the four editions of the National Conference on Sign Language Translation and Interpreting Research. We have observed that while the SLTIS stand out for involving a visual-gestural language, they also maintain an undeniable and necessary link to their origins, since they have no existence beyond the TS and IS academic fields. Considerando que as pesquisas brasileiras sobre a tradução e a interpretação de/para/entre línguas de sinais podem ser reunidas sobre o que se apresenta como Estudos da Tradução e da Interpretação de Línguas de Sinais (ETILS), realizamos uma reflexão sobre a emergência desse novo campo disciplinar em relação à sua vinculação direta aos Estudos da Tradução (ET) e aos Estudos da Interpretação (EI). Para tanto, apresentamos a interdependência e distinção fundamental entre os ET e os EI, realizamos uma busca por referências à interpretação e à tradução de línguas de sinais em importantes obras dos ET e dos EI e traçamos uma reflexão sobre os ETILS no contexto brasileiro. Essa reflexão tomou como base: as pesquisas sobre a tradução e a interpretação de línguas de sinais feitas na pós-graduação e as quatro edições do Congresso Nacional de Pesquisas em Tradução e Interpretação de Sinais. Vimos que, ao mesmo tempo em que os ETILS se singularizam por seu objeto de estudo envolver uma língua gesto-visual, eles mantêm uma inegável e necessária vinculação com suas origens, já que não têm existência para além dos campos disciplinares dos ET e dos EI.
