مستخلص: The mangrove ecosystem at the coast of the Sundarban delta in India isexperiencing a challenge towards the sea level rise as a consequence of climatechange. The objective of this research is to investigate the direct impact of sealevel rise through increased permanent inundation on the shoreline of theSundarban delta and indirect impact through increase in salinity on the upperintertidal zone. The analysis of the satellite images of the delta for the years1975, 1990, 2001, 2004 and 2007 clearly shows a decrease in the area andlandward retreat of the shoreline boundary of the mangrove vegetation due tosea level rise. However the predictions based on simple arithmetic calculationwith the data obtained from various literature reviewed, on the pattern ofsalinity and the percentage of seedling survival, reveals the dominance ofpolyhaline species at the upper intertidal zone. This in turn, may contributetowards the increase in mangrove area simultaneously, reducing the speciesdiversity of the forest under climate change scenarios. However, lack of properquantitative data and research on the trend of prevailing salinity and thesurvival and density of mangrove seedlings at Sundarban in India has left thepredictions of the impact of climate change on the mangrove ecosystem withwide range of uncertainties.
