| مستخلص: | Identifying potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) is vital to preventing adverse drug events (ADEs), cognitive and functional impairment, and gastrointestinal disturbances in the elderly (Beyer & Choi, 2017; Sharma et al., 2017). Medication screening tools (MSTs) with explicit criteria, such as the 2019 American Geriatric Society (AGS) Beers Criteria, can assist providers with identifying PIMs (Awad & Hanna, 2019). This project aims to improve confidence and knowledge in utilizing the 2019 AGS Beers Criteria during the care of older adults and assesses barriers to the non-utilization of the tool among advanced practice providers (APPs) in multistate retail-based clinics. This project used a pre-and post-test design to assess confidence in prescribing, knowledge of medications to avoid, and potential barriers to appropriate prescribing in the elderly. The intervention involves discussions and educational sessions with APPs on utilizing the 2019 AGS Beers Criteria Pocket Guide in identifying PIMs in the elderly. The findings indicated that the intervention focused on the 2019 AGS Beers Criteria improved participants prescribing confidence and knowledge in identifying PIMs, and decreased perceived barriers to the nonusage of the tool, thus improving patient safety. |
