The “castrum” of Ventajou is situated at Felines-Minervois, at the western end of the Hérault department, on one of the last southern foot-hills of the Montagne Noire. This fortified site, which appears in written documents as early as 813, is of Carolingian and maybe Visigothic origin. It is no longer mentionend towards the end of the XIVth century, which makes it a direct or indirect victim of the 100 Years’War. Between 1950 and 1980, its remains, which were in very bad repair, underwent clandestine excavations. They unearthed a lot of archaeological objects which have been entirely retrieved but are without stratigraphical context. Besides, field researches carried out by R. Marty between 1970 and 1980 permitted to locate two new sites dating back to the Early Middle Ages, sites which yielded abundant finds. Thus, in spite of a lack of real archaeological excavations, documentary sources, architectural elements and field researches combine to offer us a first glimpse of this “castrum” and its terroir. |
