Petrovicite is orthorhombic, Pnam or Pna2₁, a₀ = 16.176 ; b₀ = 14.684 ; c₀ = 4.331 Å, Z = 4 ; G[calc] = 7.707. The strongest lines in the powder pattern are : 3.621 (7) ; 3.546 (8) ; 3.186 (8) ; 3.124 (10) ; 2.961 (10) ; 2.720 (5) ; 2.262 (5) ; 2.109 (5) ; 2.061 (5) Å. The chemical analyses (microprobe) gave : Cu- 16.0 (15.3) ; Hg- 17.4 (17.9) ; Pb- 16.7 (17.3) ; Bi- 16.6 (17.4) ; Se- 34.4 (32.6) ; totals 101.1 (100.5) corresponding to Cu₃HgPbBiSe₅. The mineral is creamy in reflected light ; reflectivity : 44.8 (420), 46.5 (540), 46.0 (600), 45.5 (700 nm). It shows no bireflectance and is weakly anisotropic with polarization colours from dark green to violet. Microhardness Vickers (25 g load) : 102 kg/sq. mm. Petrovicite forms tabular crystals up to a few tenths of a mm in size, replaced by umangite and eskebornite. Poor cleavage parallel to flattening of crystals. The mineral occurs in hydrothermal carbonate veins (dolomite, calcite) of the Petrovice deposit, western Moravia, Czechoslovakia, associated to other selenides. It is extremely rare. The name is for Petrovice ore deposit. |
