New data of Early Mesozoic tholeiitic dolerites from the Pyrenees are presented from the few outcrops (mainly in Northern Spain) where these rocks have not undergone metamorphism. Since these rocks are hypabyssal, several varieties may be observed in the thickest intrusions ranging from orthopyroxene-bearing cumulates (MgO~15 %) to differentiated pegmatites (MgO~5 %). Extensive fractionation of the liquids in each rock type is attested by the marked zoning of the main phases : olivine, plagioclase and especially pyroxenes (augite, pigeonite and orthopyroxene) as well as the presence of a late magmatic stage including quartz, micropegmatites and some newly identified minerals, such as Zr-and REE-silicates (zircon, allanite and sometimes chevkinite or perrierite) and Fe- and Cl-rich biotites and amphiboles (ferroedenites). During cooling, and in the proximity of microfractures, the Fe-rich magmatic pyroxenes may be replaced by Al and Ti-poor salitic pyroxenes + iron oxides. These dolerites are a good example of the continental tholeiitic magmatism which took place around the North Atlantic margins in the Early Mesozoic. |
