| الوصف: | Abstract. The Statistical Management of Populations in the French Colonial Empire. The Case of Algeria, 1830-1960. This work is an attempt to analyse the statistical categories established in Algerian census operations during the colonial period. These categories, statistical instruments used in the management of Algerian populations, reflected representations the French administration had of different populations (different by religion, habits and customs and, during a long period of time, by way of life) who cohabited in the French Mediterranean overseas territories. Despite the obvious will to reach the same level of methodology for the Algerian statistics as the one produced in metropolitan France, the ethno-racial treatment overrode the treatment by nationality used there. This treatment was strongly linked to the ideas prevaling in demographic and statistical circles at the time. Résumé. Ce travail est un essai d'analyse des catégories statistiques mises en œuvre en Algérie, pendant la période coloniale, dans les opérations de recensement de population. Ces catégories, instruments statistiques de la gestion des populations de l'Algérie, ont reflété les représentations que l'administration française avait des populations (différentes par la religion, les mœurs, les coutumes et pendant longtemps par le genre de vie) qui cohabitaient dans les « départements français d'outre-Méditerranée ». Malgré la volonté évidente de mettre les statistiques produites au niveau de celles de la métropole, le traitement ethno-religieux a pris le pas sur le traitement par nationalité en vigueur dans la France métropolitaine. Ce traitement était étroitement imbriqué aux conceptions qui dominaient dans les milieux des démographes et des statisticiens de l'époque. |
