In this article, the origins of the spelling sequence in the medieval Castilian documentation are investigated. Given the fact that this sequence was created in the Late Roman Empire scriptae and that it is present in medieval Castilian documentation as well, a continuity in its use between these two periods of time could be inferred. However, the examination of the collections of five Benedictine monasteries from Burgos (Valpuesta, Oña, Cardeña, Arlanza and Silos) reveals that does not appear in the Visigothic documentation of these five monasteries up to the end of the 11th century. The coincidence in time between the first examples of in these collections and the arrival of the Carolingian reform to Castile suggests that this spelling sequence might be of a Carolingian origin. In that case, could be used, in combination with other Carolingian features, to more accurately date Visigothic documents of questionable date. En este artículo se investigan los orígenes de la secuencia gráfica en la documentación castellana medieval. Dado que esta secuencia fue creada en las scriptae latinas bajoimperiales y que también está presente en la documentación castellana medieval, se podría inferir que existe una continuidad en su uso entre ambos periodos. No obstante, el examen de las colecciones documentales de cinco monasterios benedictinos de la provincia de Burgos (Valpuesta, Oña, Cardeña, Arlanza y Silos) revela que no aparece en la documentación visigótica de estos cenobios hasta finales del siglo XI. La coincidencia temporal entre la aparición de en estas colecciones y la introducción de la reforma carolingia en Castilla lleva a sugerir que esta secuencia gráfica podría ser un rasgo perteneciente a la letra carolina. De ser así, podría utilizarse, en combinación con otros rasgos, para fechar con más precisión documentos visigóticos de datación problemática.
