This essay focuses on a set of excerpts from André Gide’s non-fictional works that all refer to the Sahara women and for which the expression of the writer’s masculinity stands as an interpretative framework. It is indeed in the Sahara that Gide will experience his first homosexual relationships and it is therefore worth wondering to what extent his feeling of not fitting in a social norm leads to in a shift in the look that Gide, as a European traveller, takes at the natives, especially women. Thus, we will establish that even if Gide builds a different view opposite to the one of the tourists travelling through the Sahara, he’s struggling to consider the Sahara women as his equals. It is both thanks to and because of them that he expresses a singular way of looking at the otherness. |
